Re: Lloyds Bank cocos

I had a look at the Lloyds LT2s, but none seem that attractive to me compared with the ECNs. e.g. the 9 5/8% 2023 bonds are on a yield to maturity of only 4.8%. High running yield of 7% compensates a bit, but I think I will take the additional risk [more]

Re: New Vanguard ETFs

Just read Laconicity's reply properly - very good, far clearer than mine I think.

Totally agree about the dubious manipulation of these numbers, I see the "98% of returns from dividends" rubbish quite frequently.

You have to adjust the dividends for inflation regardless of whether you [more]

Re: Stop loss for buy and hold

I currently have Thomas Cook shares showing a 1200% ( 12 Bagger ! ) gain. Would it be wise to put a stop loss on such a large gain having held them for less than 2 years ( within an ISA )

No, not even if it went up 1200% in one day! [more]

Re: New Vanguard ETFs

Thanks for your views. In my case, I am more interested in income now, than growth later. But is this true when you say: "by going for above average yield, you are stacking the odds towards below average long term total returns"? One [more]

Rog, you list a lot of things here, some of which may be a good reason to sell. Going through them:

Should I ignore the 50% gain?

No, but that does not mean you should sell (or buy more). It is interesting and may prompt you [more]

Re: ETF costs

You could just buy a world tracker, e.g. Vanguard's VWRL. This has only 8% invested in the UK. At a later date, you could then sell it, or part of it and move into other region specific ETFs to bias your holdings as you see fit. It is cheap to do [more]

Re: Lloyds Bank cocos

However, I struggle to see that Lloyds would wish to antagonise investors so.

I am inclined to agree with this. There is no need to upset investors, so why would they bother messing them about? An exchange for a 0.5% uplift in yield [more]

Re: Lloyds Bank cocos

Thanks Venik, I will take a look at these. I moved a lot of my LB1G over to Co-op senior recently for an uplift in yield (starting to rethink that now!), but the ECNs are on such a lower yield now that I am not sure it is worth holding on to them [more]

Re: IFFF versus new VAPX

I don't own it, but if I did I would definitely consider it. Probably worth waiting a couple of months though just to make sure that the Vanguard fund attracts a decent amount of money and the bid/offer spread is small.

Is it worth while placing a stop loss and taking profit should this scenario occure, or should I leave it and just buy more shares at alower price?

I think it is better to ignore the whole notion of "taking profits" except [more]

Re: Stop loss for buy and hold

I was reading a book or newspaper article recently which suggested that if the capital gain, as a percentage, is more than 6 times the current dividend yield % then one should consider taking profits. I suppose the logic is that it would take 6 [more]

Re: New Vanguard ETFs

A few thoughts on VEUR..

VEUR is reported to have 499 stocks, with 34% in the UK. They don't list the stocks, but assuming an even distribution, that would mean about 170 UK stocks, so a good way into the FTSE 250. Allocating the TER of the [more]

Re: New Vanguard ETFs

Good news from Vanguard. I would like to have seen a FTSE 250 ETF, a developed Europe exc. UK and some more bond funds, perhaps they will come in time. Some of the STOXX-50 ETFs have low TERs, but the developed Europe ETF must surely be the cheapest [more]
