Re: letting agents practice

"because of my continued use of the agent, I have to automatically abide by their standard contract/conditions?"

Strictly I reckon that you took on the contract the previous landlord agreed with the agents. Its not necessarily [more]

Re: tax due on sale of land

The annual CGT allowance is the amount of capital gain that is free of CGT on all chargeable disposals in each tax year. There's no carry forward/back. The only way to use more than one years allowance is to split the ownership and dispose of [more]

Re: Monks

"would anyone really dismiss it and just focus on the current portfolio composition?"

No; the current portfolio composition isn't everything. Look at the risks they take, gearing and costs.

Re: letting agents practice

Your continued use of the agent has established a contract between them and yourselves.

My guess is that they probably have standard T&C for their relationship with landlords. These tend to be pretty broad. If they have them ask for a [more]

Re: Getting to grips with ITs

The "unrealised gains" aspect starts to kick in when the annual gains exceed the annual allowance. Very roughly at about £100k in total value (7% annual stockmarket growth and 10k allowance).

Re: Resident Directors

Resident directors would be directors of the management company. The management company may contract an agent and the agent would manage/arrange work.

If the director intervened to stop work (eg asked the workers to leave the premises) [more]

Do it enough and the "badges of trade" criteria apply. It gets technical.

How risky are VCT's?

VCT's on Trustnet have an "FE risk score" attached. 0 is cash and 100 is the FTSE100.

"The scoring system uses a minimum of 18 months and a maximum of 3 years of weekly total returns to measure the volatility of an instrument [more]

Re: getting Rid of smoke smell

Wash it down with sugar soap. Wear gloves as the water will turn yellow but it does work. Generally concentrate on the ceiling and higher up the walls. Its not pleasant.

Re: VCT reporting

I'm not wild about reporting every three months. Its just not long enough for meaningful trends to emerge particularly with unquoteds.

Re: Resident Directors

Being resident makes no legal difference; its being a director that has the powers.

That said being resident does tend to mean a familiarity with the building and perhaps a willingness to do the simple stuff (e.g changing light bulbs ) and [more]

The OP talked about holding period for an investment I believe.

The turnover figure is based on the monetary value rather than the number of holdings. So a firm could vary the size of its holdings and this would generate a turnover figure [more]

Sounds reasonable if you have enough employment income to get tax relief on.

After the 25% its taxable at your marginal rate.

You could also save upto 2,800 into pensions for them and get tax relief. Ok its a long way ahead but [more]

I've been playing with the trustnet portfolio feature. The idea is to have an overview over the different investments.

Re: calculating capital gains tax

Also assuming this is the only chargeable event in the tax year (the tax bill is based on on the net position rather than a specific event). So shares sold at a loss would reduce the gain.

There's no danger of your choices being biased if your using past performance to select investments. Its rubbish in the first place. Choose by costs and diversify risks.

Re: Winterflood damn Henderson Value Trust

Indeed. A related question is how activist the existing shareholders are feeling; 15% is worth having. If you were looking for a value investment it could be worth a punt in the sense that if it continues your in the same boat.
